Project Overview
Community Hospital partnered with Emergent Architecture to guide long-term campus growth through a comprehensive, multi-phase master planning effort. Spanning more than a decade, the planning process reflects the hospital’s core mission: providing accessible, inclusive healthcare close to home
From the beginning, the goal was to create a clear roadmap for growth. As a result, each planning phase builds on previous work and supports thoughtful, incremental investment. This approach allows the hospital to respond to changing needs while maintaining day-to-day operations.

Master Planning for Growth and Efficiency
A Commitment to Rural Healthcare
At a time when many rural hospitals are downsizing or consolidating services, Community Hospital has chosen a different path. Instead, the hospital continues to invest in its campus and community.
This long-term commitment supports expanded care, modernized facilities, and improved patient access. Most importantly, it allows residents to receive high-quality healthcare without leaving the region. In addition, the master plan provides flexibility as healthcare delivery models continue to evolve.
Phased Growth with Flexibility
Emergent led multiple master planning efforts for Community Hospital, establishing a phased strategy that balances immediate needs with long-term goals. Each phase was carefully coordinated to minimize disruption and avoid costly rework.
Currently, the updated master plan organizes the campus into coordinated additions and renovations. While the project initially included multiple construction phases, it has since shifted to a single phase to improve efficiency and control costs. However, documentation was developed so multiple teams can work in different campus areas at the same time.
Designed to Serve the Community
Throughout every phase, the guiding focus remained the same: supporting future growth that benefits both the hospital and the broader community. Therefore, the design approach prioritizes flexibility, operational continuity, and patient experience.
Construction will begin following USDA approval. During this process, the USDA worked closely with Community Hospital to refine the scope and encouraged the hospital to group projects into a unified vision. Through ongoing dialogue and feedback, Emergent helped prepare the documentation required to move the project forward with confidence.
